What is in your food?
The six categories of food are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. Carbohydrates are the starches and sugars found in foods Lipids are the fats found in foods. Proteins are the building blocks of the body and are found in meats, beans, and nuts. Vitamins are found in and vegetables and are needed for the body to function properly. Minerals are found in meats, fruits, vegetables, and grains and are needed for the body to function properly. Water is found in all foods and is necessary for the body to function properly.
The three main types of carbohydrates are starch, sugar, and fiber. Starch is found in breads, pastas, rice, and potatoes. Sugar is found in candy, cake, cookies, and fruit. Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
There are three main types of lipids: saturated, unsaturated, and trans fats. Saturated fats are found in meats, cheeses, and butter. Unsaturated fats are found in olive oil, nuts, and avocados. Trans fats are found in processed foods, such as cookies and crackers.
There are three main types of proteins: animal, vegetable, and whey. Animal proteins are found in meats, poultry, and fish. Vegetable proteins are found in beans, lentils, and tofu. Whey proteins are found in dairy products, such as milk and cheese.
Vitamins are classified as water-soluble or fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins are found in fruits and vegetables and are not stored in the body. Fat-soluble vitamins are found in meats, oils, and dairy products and are stored in the body.
Minerals are classified as major or trace. Major minerals are found in large quantities in the body and are necessary for the body to function properly. Trace minerals are found in small quantities in the body and are not necessary for the body to function properly.
Water is essential for the body to function properly. It is found in all foods and is the largest component of the human body.
