Sweet Dessert Wine: Complete Mineral Profile

Sweet Dessert Wine: Considered a good source of minerals?

Sweet dessert wines, such as late harvest or fortified wines, are not a good source of minerals. Unlike dry wines, they contain much less mineral compounds because their sweetness is derived from other sources, like grapes that have been allowed to ripen longer, added sugar, and/or spirits. Sweet dessert wines usually contain 1-2 calories per fluid ounce, just slightly more than white table wines which typically have 0.9 calories per fluid ounce. The caloric difference is mainly due to the added sugars. While alcohol does provide some essential nutrients, these sweet wines lack in vitamins and only trace amounts of minerals. Additionally, because these wines can be very high in sugar content and calories, overconsumption should be limited.
