Nutrition Profiles of Fruit

The fruit food group is one of the five major food groups as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The other food groups are vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein. The USDA recommends that adults eat 2-4 cups from the fruit group each day as part of a healthy diet. The fruit food group is a classification of foods that contain natural sugars, fiber, and vitamins. This food group includes fresh fruits, dried fruits, and 100% fruit juices. The recommended daily intake of the fruit food group is 2-3 cups for adults and 1-2 cups for children (USDA).

There are many reasons why the fruit food group is important. Fruits are a good source of fiber which helps to keep us regular and can also help to lower cholesterol levels. Fruits are also a good source of Vitamin C which helps to boost our immune system and protect us from getting sick. Additionally, the natural sugars in fruits give us energy that we need to get through our day.

While all types of fruit are part of the healthy diet recommended by nutrition experts, some types of fruit stand out as being particularly beneficial due to their high nutrient or antioxidant content. For example, blueberries have been shown to improve brain function while grapes contain resveratrol which has been linked with heart health benefits. oranges provide beta-carotene while kiwis offer folate – both nutrients that are important for pregnant women.
